The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has launched a major nationwide health intervention aimed at eliminating three neglected tropical diseases that continue to affect thousands of people across the country.<\/p>\n
The 2026 Integrated Mass Drug Administration Campaign seeks to tackle Onchocerciasis, commonly known as River Blindness, Lymphatic Filariasis, also referred to as Elephantiasis, and Schistosomiasis, widely known as Bilharzia.<\/p>\n
Health officials say the campaign forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to eliminate these diseases as public health concerns by the year 2030. Under the programme, millions of residents living in identified risk areas will receive preventive medication free of charge.<\/p>\n
Medical experts explain that neglected tropical diseases often affect vulnerable populations living in rural and underserved communities. Left untreated, these conditions can lead to disability, reduced productivity, and long-term health complications.<\/p>\n
According to the Ghana Health Service, trained health workers and community volunteers will conduct door-to-door distribution exercises and organise community outreach activities to ensure widespread participation.<\/p>\n
Authorities have appealed to traditional leaders, religious organisations, and local media outlets to support public education efforts aimed at increasing awareness and participation.<\/p>\n
